Threats to Biodiversity and Environments
One of the largest threats to the environment is cattle farming. The farmers erect fences and clear the land of native vegetation, which many animals depend on for food and shelter. The grazers also poison many native animals, which can greatly disrupt the ecosystem.
Diamond mining has also affected the stability and balance of the ecosystem. Many native tribes were evicted from their native lands due to diamond mining, and animal species were displaced. The mining also affected the landscape, and uses up water, which is already scarce due to the aridity of the area.

Impact of Human Activity
The Kalahari Desert has been left in a relatively stable state. Very little human activity occurs within the Kalahari Desert, and much of it is safari. The only human activities that have had an affect on the biome are diamond mining and cattle farming. The cattle farming has forced animals off their land and damaged the flora in the area, which are not used to the new consumers. The diamond mining in the Kalahari is not very widespread, and it only occurs in small parts of Botswana. This has done the same as the cattle farming- forced native animals off their land. It has also polluted the water, which is already scarce.
Impact Mitigation
There has been little work regarding the mitigation of the impact of pastoral farming on the Kalahari because it has not gained any major traction and no one is particularly concerned about the Desert due to its lack of Net Primary Production and the aridity of the land. However, numerous diamond mines in Botswana were closed down due to a lawsuit claiming they forced native Bushmen off their tribal lands. However, some diamond mines are still functional. The Kalahari Desert is not regarded as a biome in danger because it has very littler value as land and its flora and fauna are incredibly hardy due to the harsh environment they are native to.
